Annual rally held April 10 to 'Take Back the Night'

On Thursday, April 10, members of the Simpson community gathered in Smith Chapel to "Take Back the Night." The event, an effort to end sexual violence, is held around the world. Simpson's event included speeches by senior Alison Jepsen and freshman Anna Holley.

Candidates for Distinguished Faculty Award announced

May's graduating seniors currently have the opportunity to vote via email for one of three faculty members nominated for the Distinguished Faculty Award.

The award, given to stimulate and reward excellence in teaching, will be presented to Jeff Parmelee, associate professor of biology; Professor of Mathematics Rick Spellerberg or Brian Steffen, professor of communication studies at Commencement.

Departments offer new course proposals for upcoming catalog

Professors from departments across campus are working hard to develop new courses for the 2009-2011 course catalog.

Every two years the course catalog is updated with revised majors and new courses. While classes can be added or dropped by a program at any time, years with new catalogs tend to bring the most proposals.

Password changes to be required every 120 days

Last week, students were informed by e-mail they needed to change their password and it had to meet certain criteria.

There was a valid reason for these changes. According to Al Appenzeller, director of information services, everyone on Simpson College's network, not just students, were required to change their passwords due to security reasons.

Students vote to elect SGA members

Student Government Association elections recently took place and new members officially transitioned into their new offices Wednesday, April 9.

Rich Ramos, assistant dean for student activities, said the election process is fairly simple. The students fill out a form indicating which position they are interested in running for.

Men's Golf

Grand View Classic, April 6-7: The Storm placed seventh at the Grand View Classic with an overall team score of 613. Sophomore Brett DeNeve led the way for the Storm with an overall score of 148, the eighth best score of the tournament, shooting a 70 in round one and a 78 in round two.

Manny becomes wrestling's new head coach

The Simpson wrestling program has a new chief. After a committee interviewed several candidates on April 4, Athletic Director John Sirianni announced Clint Manny as the new head wrestling coach. For the rookie coach, the promotion caused a stir of emotions.

Men's golf team determined to have great finish to season

With only the Buena Vista Invitational left, the men's golf team will head into the conference tournament next weekend in hopes of achieving a conference title.

"The Storm has shown signs of great promise as we prepare for the conference tournament," Larry Shoop, head men's golf coach, said.

New administrative roles selected in Athletic Department

The Athletic Department has filled administrative positions, sorting out the responsibilities of resigning Assistant Athletic Director Ron Peterson. Bob Nutgrass, head of the Physical Education Department, will be taking on the role of compliance coordinator while resigning as the men's and women's head tennis coach.

'Continuously published' claim finds historic backing

In an online forum for the Associated Collegiate Press, students have argued over which paper they think is the oldest college newspaper in the country.

One person argued for East Central Wisconsin's paper, founded in 1868. Another was for the Westfield State College newspaper, whose first edition, "The Normal Casket," was published in 1852.

Emergency alert system sheds light on modern day campus realities

This past Friday, administrators tested the new SAFE alert system. The system is meant to alert students, staff and faculty if any violent situation were to occur on campus. The system will also send alerts about severe weather.

Aside from the alert system, many members of the community have implemented new programming and ideas to not only help students adjust to college living, but also how to stay safe throughout their Simpson experience.

Goodwill Fashion Show gives back to the community

Senior art exhibit showcases talent

On Thursday, April 17, from 6-8 p.m., an art exhibit for senior art majors will open in Farnham Galleries. This show is an opportunity to show members of the Simpson staff and community what they have learned over the course of their time at Simpson.

The art show is part of the capstone requirement for art majors, all senior art majors are required to take.

Last week, I left the Simp lab in the middle of the day on a Monday--a sin for any newspaper editor--but I forgot my cell phone in my car. I zipped out to the parking lot, grabbed the device and locked my car door. Hearing the high-pitched robotic beep, I was satisfied the vehicle was locked and I could head back into my "cell," also known as the newspaper lab.

OUR VIEW

This week, Information Services implemented a campus-wide password change. Even through the best of intentions were behind the policy, it nonetheless created more than a few headaches.

The process was far from simple, and many students, despite their best efforts, ended up in the office at Info Services, being walked through the process (many after being locked out of their accounts).

Hello all Simpson students!! All is going well here. We are active in Covenant therapies for mainly the left side of my body as well as attending the UNI Speech and Hearing Clinic in order to get back to school. I am planning to take a class this May Term there and see how it all goes.

Theatre major lives life with gusto

Growing up in Indianola most of his life, junior Jacob Kaufman originally came to Simpson for convenience.

"I graduated from high school in three years and my freshman year of college was more like an extension of high school, but I ended up staying," Kaufman said.
