(Cough)

It's that time of year again...

(Cough)

It's that time of year where the coughing in class is louder than your professor. It's inevitable...

Getting sick.

I'm not talking about the "sick" after a heaving night of ingesting beer but the "sick" you receive from the virus influenza. We all know the symptoms; you cough so loud it rattles in your head and you feel at any second you could literally hack up a lung. Your nose runs faster than you can. You're so tired you don't need to read from a textbook to help you sleep. Headaches pound like jackhammers inside your noggin'.

There's a way to stop it (and it doesn't require pills or fasting).According to the nurses at Mercy Clinic on Detroit Street, they say the best things to do are:

Wash your hands. Most of the nasty stuff is spread by some contact from one person to another. I realize you can't wash your hands every 15 seconds, but you can carry hand sanitizer or pilfer some from a neighbor. Sanitizer kills 99.9 percent of germs, and if you shake your hands vigorously, your hands will feel really cool.

- Get plenty of sleep. You can now justify the amount of naps you take a day. Sleeping gives your body a chance to fight the flu.

- A Flu Shot. They'e offered around campus, and I don't think they could hurt your chances.

- Well-rounded diet. For some of you this doesn't apply, but for others you might want to consider eating something from Pfeiffer besides pizza and fries. Eat fruits and vegetables and drink milk. If you ingest healthy items you will give yourself the proper natural vitamins your body craves.

- The next steps aren't from the Mercy nurses, but I'm sure they are just as useful--

- Seal yourself from the rest of the world. This may not be entirely feasible, but it's worth a shot!

- Don't date. Influenza and cooties are related, and I'm sure you don't want to take that chance.

- Hibernate. Bears do it, so it has to work.

- Not study. I'm sure illness and studying are related...I'm sure of it.

You may follow this advice to perfection and still get sick. Or you may not even try to follow this advice because it doesn't fit your schedule and you get sick. However if you get the flu, here is some advice to help you get better (because skipping classes isn't all it's cracked up to be):

- Drink plenty of fluids. Grab your Nalgene bottle and fill it full of water and consume. By keeping yourself hydrated you can naturally flush out the harmful virus. You can also drink any sports drink or a clear pop. Whatever your taste desires, buy bulk and consume, consume, consume.

- Get rested up! Grab your favorite TV show on DVD and don't stop until the season is completed. And sleep, too.

- Call Mom and hope she comes to take care of you. It won't work, but you'll make her sympathize with you and you might get a care package.

- Chicken noodle soup. I don't know if it will help, but I see it help in commercials and if commercials lie, I don't want to know what's right.

The climate change makes getting sick almost inevitable, but with these fool proof steps you will be on the right track to dodge the nasty influenza virus. Staying healthy is important in life, so you should take the influenza virus seriously. It may start as a tiny cold, but if you don't nip it in the bud early it could lead to a harmful winter.
